Well now you can experience Victoria anytime. Tourism Victoria announces the launch of “Place Your Face,” a new interactive video designed to market the destination by sharing cutting-edge digital entertainment with friends and family.
Go to: www.tourismvictoria.com/placeyourface, upload a picture of your face and a picture of a friend, and voila! Your faces become digitally attached to the bodies and you’re off on your Victoria, B.C. getaway. You can watch your creation repeatedly or email your creation to family and friends.
"This is another step in our continuing commitment to use digital strategies to market our destination," said Robert Gialloreto, President & CEO of Tourism Victoria. "Through our partnership with Copeland Communications on this project, we are able to separate ourselves a bit from other destinations by using fun and creative ways to engage our consumers."

The Place Your Face websites were produced for Tourism Victoria by Victoria-based advertising and communications agency Copeland Communications. “We’re thrilled to bring this new form of consumer-generated digital media to Victoria,” said Doug Brown, Managing Director of Copeland Communications. “It’s a great way for consumers to be a part of a campaign. What’s more, it’s fun – just like Victoria.”

Membership Matters eNewsletter June 3

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345741276762455202" style="FLOAT: left; Tourism Victoria has launched four videos on YouTube.com, the leader in online videos. By creating unique and attention-grabbing videos, Tourism Victoria is taking advantage of YouTube.com’s world-wide audience to market our destination. The videos can be viewed by visiting www.tourismvictoria.com/videos or by searching “TourismVictoriaBC” on YouTube.com. Among the videos is “A Match That’s Nowhere To Be Found” a concept submitted by Graham Richard Parrish from the Camosun College School of Business during Tourism Victoria’s spring Student Video Contest.

“This cost-effective medium is significantly different than television, and therefore the creative had to be unique and non-traditional”, said Robert Gialloreto, President & CEO of Tourism Victoria. “With the viral nature of YouTube.com you never know what’s going to be popular and generate buzz. We are optimistic the variety of the videos we’ve produced will generate attention for our destination and additional web traffic.”

Sunshine Guaranteed? After raining 12.8mm on Sunday, April 12, 2009 – 0.3mm more than Tourism Victoria assured in the spring promotion Sunshine… Guaranteed, cheques for $500 have been issued to three booking parties.

Jennifer Harbin from Edmonton, AB, is one of those benefiting from the unusually heavy rainfall and she says the rain didn’t stop her family from seeing the city during their 3 night stay. “We had a nice time,” said Harbin. “We found lots of great things to do, it’s a wonderful city.” Harbin said that even though it did rain, they filled their time enjoying the scenery when the weather permitted, and enjoying the indoor attractions during showers. Harbin remarked she wasn’t sure she qualified, but is thrilled Tourism Victoria wrote her a cheque and loves the promotion.

“We are so pleased that visitors to Victoria are able to take advantage of this promotion,” said Robert Gialloreto, President & CEO of Tourism Victoria. “The short-term weather forecast calls for sunshine but it’s no secret that weather on the West Coast is unpredictable, and with the promotion running through the end of May, there’s lots of opportunity for everyone to take advantage.”

Details about the limited time offer are available by phone at 1-800-663-3883 or by visiting www.tourismvictoria.com/sunshine.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tourismvic.blogspot.com/2009/04/sunshine-guaranteed-absolutely.html' title='Sunshine Guaranteed? Beginning April 3, 2009, 16 local hotels will provide guests with specialized key cards for their rooms. Each card displays information about the approaching exhibit and directs guest to http://www.tourismvictoria.com/ for great deals and further information.

Green-Key™ is an environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional plastic keycard used in hotel’s electronic lock systems. Rather than being manufactured from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Green-Key™ is made from paperboard, a biodegradable, recyclable and renewable resource.

“The members of the Hotel Association of Greater Victoria are excited to partner with Tourism Victoria and the RBCM to create an awareness of Treasures,” said Scott Hoadley, President, of the Hotel Association of Greater Victoria. “By having this event featured on the guest room keys, we are literally putting the message in the hands of people who are already familiar with what a wonderful destination Victoria is. It is an invitation to come back and see Victoria and the RBCM’s upcoming exhibit.”

"This creative campaign will put Treasures information directly into the hands of thousands of visitors. By working together with our local tourism industry partners we can boost important local buzz about this must-see international exhibition," said Royal BC Museum CEO Pauline Rafferty.

“I couldn't think of a better way to tell all those visiting Victoria that we have a great exhibit coming to town,” said John Clisby, General Manager of the Victoria Best Western Carlton Plaza Hotel. “The visitors that come prior to the event’s opening will see the province's museum is hosting a tremendous exhibit for all to enjoy.”

“This is another example of collaboration amongst major tourism players in the city to promote a tremendous world class exhibit,” said Robert Gialloreto, President & The overall goal of the BCDMOA is to improve organization and industry performance in the BC communities where Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) are active. The association believes that through mutual exchange and collaboration BC DMOs will achieve enhanced professionalism, accountability and performance.

“The BC DMO Association is positioned to support performance growth for existing Destination Marketing Organizations; but more importantly to support the effective initial formation of new DMOs,” states Dan Stefanson, Executive Director of Tourism Abbotsford and the inaugural Chair of the BCDMOA. “Through effective exchange and collaboration, DMO senior executives and boards of directors can discover the best way to operate their organizations resulting in program delivery that maximizes revenue opportunities for their business partners and tourism operators”.

The primary action items for the group moving forward are to: identify solutions for issues and challenges facing DMOs; distribute and recommend the adoption of the 2007 Best Practices Study; collaborate with government and industry stakeholders to define benchmarks and standards for effectiveness and raise the awareness of the resources and opportunities available through Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI). Victoria ranked as the third best city in the Americas in Conde Nast Traveler's 2008 Readers' Choice Awards, tied with Quebec City.

Cities are rated on criteria such as ambience, friendliness, culture, sites, restaurants, lodging and shopping. Victoria has consistently been named among the top ten cities in the Americas in Conde Nast's annual Readers' Choice Awards, taking top honours as the number one best city in the Americas in 2003.

"It is an honour for Victoria to be recognized as one of the best cities in the world in such a consistent fashion and in a prominent publication like Conde Nast Traveler," says Rob Gialloreto, Tourism Victoria's President & CEO. "With a per issue readership of over three million, Conde Nast is considered a premier travel magazine and accolades such as this raise awareness of Victoria as one of the world's finest destinations."

Victoria's accolades coincide with Vancouver Island being awarded the Readers' Choice award for Top North American Island for the seventh year in a row. Vancouver Island ranked first ahead of Kiawah and Nantucket in the North American Island category.

"With the natural beauty of Victoria and Vancouver Island, and the first-class tourism products we offer visitors, it is no surprise that we are recognized by travellers as a world-class destination," said Bill Bennett, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. "This kind of recognition will only increase as the world watches British Columbia prepare for and host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games."

"With Vancouver Island taking top spot for North American Islands for a record seventh year, and Victoria tying for third place as top American city, the readers of Conde Nast Traveller are telling us something that we are fortunate to know already - the wide variety of unique travel experiences found on Vancouver Island and in Victoria are unparalleled in the world," said Rod Harris, President & CEO of Tourism British Columbia.

Congratulations to Tourism Victoria Members who were also recognized:

Best of the Best 2008
47th - Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino
67th - Long Beach Lodge Resort, Tofino
Top 30 Canada Hotels
1st - Hotel Grand Pacific, Victoria
3rd - Sooke Harbour House, Sooke
7th - Magnolia Hotel & Spa, Victoria
14th - Fairmont Empress, Victoria
17th - Victoria Regent Hotel, Victoria
23rd - Aerie Resort & Spa, Vancouver Island
24th - Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa, Vancouver Island

Top 20 Canada Resorts
2nd - Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino
3rd - Long Beach Lodge Resort, Tofino
16th - Poets Cove Resort & Spa, Pender Island

Established in 1987, Conde Nast Traveler is designed for the experienced, discerning, frequent traveller and reports on an array of diverse travel experiences. Tourism Victoria is the second British Columbia organization to receive accreditation, and among a select Canadian group who have qualified.

DMAP accreditation standards cover a wide variety of topics including governance, finance, management, human resources, technology, visitor services, group services, sales, communications, membership, brand management, destination development, research/market intelligence, innovation and stakeholder relationships.

DMAP is an independent international accreditation body and a leader in defining quality and performance issues in destination marketing. Only TripAdvisor’s Destinations Awards represent the opinions of millions of travelers. The winners were determined by a combination of TripAdvisor’s travelers’ favorite places and overall popularity on TripAdvisor. “Whether it’s for their unique beauty, or abundance of attractions, the 2008 Travelers’ Choice Destinations Awards honor the most beloved destinations from around the world,” said Michele Perry, vice president of global communications for TripAdvisor. “Determined by millions of travelers, the Travelers’ Choice Destinations Awards are unique because they single out not just popular places but truly exceptional places that enthrall travelers and keep them coming back.”

Check out TripAdvisor reviews on Victoria

View the complete 2008 Travelers’ Choice Destination list.

For the complete 2008 Travelers’ Choice list, go to www.tripadvisor.com/TCDestinations.
